Global Equal Democracy is an old dream. Throughout history, democracy has always risen to meet the urgent needs of the people. Societies faced overwhelming challenges: social injustice, economic inequality, and the longing for voting rights. Ancient Athens and the big Revolutions are classic examples. Other examples are the fight for women’s suffrage and the protests against Apartheid. During harsh times, people unite. They create new forms of governance that promise equality and collective solutions. Today, we stand at a similar crossroads, but globally. The problem is that there is no democratic global governance.
We share the same Problem, but globally
The issues we confront — climate change, war, pandemics, economic instability, and internet fraud — do not recognize national borders. They demand a united, collective response that no nation can achieve alone. Past generations fought to create democratic institutions within their countries. Now, our interconnected world calls for a new overall global governance that truly mirrors our shared destiny. Few, if any, would like to see a global Dictatorship, but luckily, there is a Democratic way.
Technology is here
Tools to make this vision real are already at our fingertips. The spread of literacy and print media during the Enlightenment ignited democratic ideas. Similarly, today’s digital technologies offer unprecedented opportunities for global participation. There are billions of smartphones providing connectivity. With an app containing a voting booth, debates, a budget simulator, and much more, we can divide the democratic work. Thus, a global democratic process is more than possible. It is within our reach, as described in Establishing a Global Climate Council: A Call for Equal Democracy
We are Intertwined
Globalization has intertwined our economies. We are now all economically interdependent. Crises in one part of the world can ripple across the globe, affecting lives thousands of miles away. A national mortgage algorithm leads to a global bank crisis. A war between two countries disturbs the global grain supply. This interdependence calls for coordinated policies and fair decision-making. Without global democracy, we stay at the mercy of national interests, which can be narrow-minded and exclusionary.
Ethical Reasons
A profound moral imperative drives the push for global democracy. Awareness of inequalities and injustices increases and fuels the demand for a system that guarantees fairness. Fair resource distribution on a global scale should also be pursued. With fairness comes higher morale, trust, and confidence. Extending democratic principles beyond national borders isn’t just the next logical step in governance evolution—it’s a moral necessity.
Impossibility Contra Necessity
By considering the power game between heavily armed nations, one may think this project is impossible. Indeed, the nation-states and their sovereignty claim are the biggest obstacles. The journey toward global democracy will not be free from challenges. The world’s rich cultural and political diversity creates another significant hurdle. Additionally, the complexities of establishing enforceable global laws pose further difficulties. Yet, history teaches us that radical changes often emerge from necessity. When existing political systems fail to meet the people’s needs, it is impossible to stop the change.
Equal Democracy as a Problem Solver
The urgency of today’s global challenges poses threats that endanger all of humanity. These challenges mirror the critical needs that have historically driven societies toward democratic reform. Equal Democracy is a powerful tool for collective problem-solving through increased political freedom, equality, and genuine political self-representation. It uses the smartphone for global decision-making. A global referendum is imperative and will be held in the app. When it is time to vote depends on our collective will to pursue the transformation. We hope that by the end of 2030, voting can be done.
The Courage Needed
When the need is great and existing structures fall short, change isn’t just possible. It becomes imperative. At this pivotal moment in our shared history, we must pause. We should ask ourselves an important question: Do we have the courage to take the next step? Global Peer Democracy is challenging, but it offers a clear path ahead. It ensures every global citizen’s impact in shaping our common future and a new hope for the planet Earth.
Join us in making Equal Democracy a reality. Together, we can build a world where democracy is truly global, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all.
